down but not out

little sister was down for a few days with a stomach virus. she seemed to have all the typical symptoms – so the approach was to rest, drink fluids, and let the illness run its course. when she became unable to keep anything down, we decided to take her to the doctor.
at 7pm, the only option was a 24-hr urgent care ER, where they confirmed that it was indeed just a virus, but were concerned about dehydration. after taking a pill for the nausea, we fed her 5 cc of pedialyte every 5 min for about an hour. when she was able to keep that down, they gave her tylenol for the 101.5 fever, and we continued the fluids. all the while she was this sad little sack, slumped over & unwilling to leave mommy’s lap. but – as soon as she started feeling better – she was back to her old self. it amazes me how resilient kids are and how honest they are about their state.
at first, i felt guilty having hesitated to take her to a doctor. part of being my second child, i guess, and thinking that i am more experienced and trying not to run to the doctor for every little thing. i have learned that sometimes you have to let the illness develop a bit before they can diagnose it. i am thankful we sought out help when we did and that we are back to the normal routine.
