word of the day

big sister used a new word in conversation today.

i was driving the girls to school and asked little sister to make sure my purse was in the backseat with her, with the rest of my stuff for work. daddy had loaded my things into the car as i sat with big sister studying for today’s spelling test – which is the usual friday routine, so i just wanted to double check that my purse had made it into the car. then big sister asked why i needed my purse. so i explained that since i was driving i need to carry my drivers license, which is always in my purse.

“if i get stopped by a police man, i will have to show him my license,” i said.

“remember when daddy got stopped?” big sister asked.

“yes,” i said, and thought about last thanksgiving break when he got stopped while we were in new mexico. so my mind wondered off – has it been a year already? - as the girls kept talking…

then i heard her say to little sister, “so she won’t be taken to “jubie.”

change the “b” sound to “j” and you get “juvi”, as in juvenile jail, i guess. what???

“what is jubie?” i ask, puzzled and in disbelief.

“it’s a school for kids.” dare i elaborate on the facts or just keep her innocent?

“who told you that?” i asked.

“my friends.”

and so i left it at that.
