big sister started telling me about a dream she had, something about a bucket full of one dollar bills. i thought – that’s a cool dream, but aren’t you too young to start dreaming of money like that??
then she went on about who’s picture is on the one dollar bill. i helped her out and said “george washington”.
“yes, mom. george washington.” it was then that I remembered seeing some of her worksheets come home that were dealing with different presidents, the president’s day holiday, etc. it all makes sense now.
next, she started to explain that a nickel has a person on it too. so i thought i’d help her out again, guessing “abraham lincoln?” she said “no, mom, it starts with a J.” so i start running names thru my head, but never came up with the answer. (she could not remember either) so today with the help of the internet, i (re)learned that it is thomas jefferson on the nickel. (no, not even looking at the image on a nickel itself triggered my memory!) so, i decided to brush up on the rest of my currency knowledge, just in case my kindergartener asks… and so i won't be embarrassed again.
penny = lincoln
nickel = jefferson
dime = roosevelt
quarter = washington
half-dollar = kennedy
dollar coin = varies
$1 bill = washington
$2 bill (really, they still use this??) = jefferson
$5 bill = lincoln
$10 bill = hamilton
$20 bill = jackson
$50 bill = grant
$100 bill = franklin
