this morning, the girls and i were in their room and big sister started asking questions about the letters on the wall that spell out each of their names.
big sister: "who made our names?"
me: "popo did. i traced the letters onto wood and he cut them out."
big sister: "did he cut them with a sword?"
me: "no, he used a saw." then i pretended to use a jigsaw in the air. "he made them right when you were just born," i said to little sister. she smiled.
big sister: "mommy, remember when she was little, i was bigger."
little sister kinda frowned at that, got to thinking, and then quickly told big sister: "and when you were little, you had curly hair!" - and she made curly-cue motions around her own head.
big sister: "but now my hair is looonnnng!"
little sister: " and mine is short, but it's getting longer..."
big sister: "and i eat lots of ham, so mine is long."
me: "ham??? did popo tell you eating ham will make your hair grow long?"
i only ask because my father also told them that chocolate milk comes from bulls. so it was possible he also said this about ham.
big sister: "no, gina said that."
her tone is very matter of fact with no reason to think that what she was saying was not the truth. only then did i recall this topic coming up during our attempts to get little sister to eat her christmas dinner. i suppose there are worse things to hear and repeat, like where chocolate milk comes from. so i just sighed to myself and let it go.
