once upon a time there was a little girl named big sister. one day she discovered that she had a loose tooth. it would wiggle back & forth, and forth & back, and she spent much of her time wiggling it with her hands and tongue. every day, her mommy would ask, “how is your tooth?” to which she’d reply “okay.”
then one day, when mommy asked, “how is your tooth?” big sister casually replied “it’s gone.”
“what?!” said mommy. “it finally came out??”
“yes” the sweet five-year-old said. “but i threw it in the trashcan. it was bloody.”
“okay,” replied mommy in shock & disappointment. “that is okay. we will just write the tooth fairy a letter explaining what happened, and she will pay you for your tooth even though you do not have it anymore.”
so that night, mommy helped big sister write a letter & they placed it under her pillow.

in the morning, big sister found a note from the fairy and a crisp dollar bill. the fairy reminded her to save the next tooth that falls out for her, and to always brush & take care of her teeth no matter what.
big sister was pleased with herself and seemed to be looking forward to losing the next baby tooth. she insisted on taking her dollar bill & letter to school so that everyone could see.
with a small bit of motherly concern, mommy wrote to big sister’s teacher to inform her of the incident.
the teacher soon wrote back and soothed mommy’s worries.

Deborah,
What a memory. That is a hoot. I envision you treasuring and trying to capture all these firsts and I think that make it even funnier.
